Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, the two men behind Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media, have pledged to give the compensation they awarded by the court in their case against Sheriff Joe Arpaio to the different migrants’ rights organizations operating in Arizona.
On October 18, 2007, the duo was arrested by Maricopa Counter Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The two journalists were taken in the middle of the night and arrested. This was done after they ran a story about organized jury proceedings that searched for reporters’ notes about the Sheriff.
To the shock of everyone, more information revealed that the grand jury has gone to the extent of requesting for the details of all those who had read the article online in New Times.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin defended their rights as guaranteed by the First Amendment and successfully sued the county in the United States Court of Appeals. The charges against them were then dropped.
About five years ago, the 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals ruled in their favor and said they were wrongfully arrested and awarded them a $3.75 million settlement.
